The Elementary Years

Building Strong Foundations

In the Elementary years, students are guided to develop self-awareness, a love of learning, and a deepening understanding of their unique gifts and responsibilities as children of God.

In Grades 1–3, children strengthen the reading, writing, and mathematical skills that open the door to learning across subjects. Teachers combine clear instruction with practice, discussion, creativity, and exploration. As students grow, they learn to explain their ideas, persevere through challenges, and contribute to a caring Catholic community.

What Your Child Will Learn

Religion

At School of the Incarnation, our Religion curriculum follows the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s ‘Bringing Good News’ framework, a standards based program that serves as a road map for students and teachers as they journey together through the knowledge, traditions, and teachings of the Catholic faith.

Built on the Six Tasks of Catechesis, our Religion program forms the whole child in faith, guiding students in their knowledge of Scripture and Church teaching, liturgical education, moral formation, prayer, community life, and missionary initiation. From the earliest grades, students develop a foundational understanding of who God is, who they are as children of God, and how they are called to live in relationship with Him and with others. As they progress through each grade level, that understanding deepens, preparing them to go out into the world as informed, faith filled disciples of Jesus Christ.

English Language Arts

At School of the Incarnation, our English Language Arts curriculum is built on the Catholic, College and Career Ready framework established by the Archdiocese of Baltimore and is fully integrated with our Catholic faith. Through a rich and rigorous course of study in literature, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and oral language, students develop the skills they need to become confident, articulate communicators and passionate, lifelong readers. From foundational literacy skills in the early grades to complex critical thinking and written expression in the upper grades, our ELA program grows with each student, preparing them not only for academic success but for a lifetime of meaningful engagement with the written and spoken word.

Mathematics

At School of the Incarnation, our Mathematics curriculum follows the Archdiocesan framework for all Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Our program covers a broad range of mathematical concepts including counting and cardinality, operations and algebraic thinking, measurement and data, geometry, and numbers and operations.

Rooted in the belief that Catholic education exists to educate the whole child, both mind and soul, our math curriculum is rigorous and challenging, growing in complexity with each grade level. From foundational number sense and basic operations in the early grades to multiplication, fractions, and geometric measurement in the upper grades, our students develop the mathematical skills and critical thinking they need to succeed academically and beyond.

Curiosity Across the Curriculum

Science, social studies, the arts, physical education, and other learning experiences broaden students’ view of the world. They investigate questions, make connections between subjects, and learn to use evidence and examples to explain their ideas. Classroom conversation encourages children to listen closely and respond thoughtfully.

Habits for Learning and Community

Children learn to organize their work, take responsibility, cooperate, and persevere when something is difficult. Prayer, service, and everyday choices help them live our values of integrity, initiative, and inclusion. With growing independence, they begin to choose strategies, reflect on mistakes, and celebrate progress.
