Kindergarten
Building on Our Foundation
Our Kindergarten classrooms are places where students learn from each other, from their environment, and through educational experiences.
Kindergarten at School of the Incarnation is a pivotal year in every child’s educational journey. Building on the foundation established in our Pre-K program, kindergarten is where students begin to make real and exciting strides in their learning, developing the skills, confidence, and curiosity that will carry them through their years at SOTI and beyond.
Our full day kindergarten program is rooted in our Catholic faith and designed to nurture each child’s personal relationship with Jesus while cultivating a genuine love for learning that will last a lifetime. We believe that when children fall in love with learning early, everything else follows.

What Your Child Will Learn
Our kindergarten follows the academic standards of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, fully integrated with our Catholic faith. Children grow in religion and faith formation, reading and language arts, early math and problem-solving, and hands-on discovery across science, social studies, and the arts. Religion
The Archdiocese of Baltimore Kindergarten Religion Curriculum continues the focus on the basic foundation of our Catholic Faith which begins in the Pre-K curriculum. While building upon the foundation of the faith, there is a yearlong focus on Prayer, Service, and the Liturgical Year. In the first three units the students explore the Trinity in progression, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. An additional focus of the Holy Spirit unit is developing an understanding of the Sacraments, especially the Sacraments of Initiation. Students will examine ideas of morality and family life while relating experiences to show respect for all life. The end of the year culminates with lessons on our call to be disciples. Through exploration of service and vocations students will consider their role as children of God and how to be followers of Christ.

Language and Early Literacy
Our kindergarten Language Arts curriculum is designed to develop independent, curious, and capable learners. Students are immersed in a rich and comprehensive literacy experience that spans six units of study throughout the year, covering reading literature and informational texts, foundational reading skills, writing, speaking, listening, and language development. A special emphasis is placed on making meaningful connections to texts, developing early writing skills through a structured writing process, and building familiarity with a growing variety of informational texts. Beyond the core curriculum, we also focus on the foundational skills that set young learners up for success, including fine motor development, proper pencil grip, and the ability to sit and write with confidence and control. Our goal is to send every kindergartner forward as an independent thinker who values evidence, builds strong content knowledge, and approaches learning with curiosity, confidence, and a love for the written and spoken word.

Discovery and Early Mathematical Thinking
Kindergarten mathematics focuses on developing a strong foundation in number sense, counting, and early operations. Students learn to represent, compare, and compose numbers up to 20, laying the groundwork for future fluency in addition and subtraction. They begin to explore place value concepts, understand the relationship between numbers and quantities, and use objects, drawings, and equations to represent mathematical ideas. Students classify, measure, and compare attributes, describe shapes in the environment, and explore the composition and decomposition of shapes. Learning is hands-on and grounded in real-world contexts that are meaningful to young learners. Catholic values such as order, precision, and reasoning are embedded in daily routines and classroom discourse, helping students see math as a tool for understanding the world and honoring God’s design.

Science
Our Kindergarten Science curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and build a foundation for scientific thinking from the very first weeks of school. Students are introduced to the engineering design process and the scientific method through hands-on experiences, with an emphasis on lab safety and the proper use of scientific tools that carries throughout the entire year.
From there, students explore three engaging units of study. In Plants, Animals, and Their Environment, students investigate how living things interact with their surroundings, what they need to survive, and how humans can help protect and care for the natural world. In Forces and Interactions, students discover the science of pushes and pulls, exploring how forces affect the motion, speed, and direction of objects through hands-on experimentation. Finally in Weather Watching, students observe and describe weather patterns, investigate the effects of sunlight on Earth’s surface, and learn how to stay safe during severe weather. Throughout every unit, STEM connections and hands-on activities bring scientific concepts to life, nurturing the natural curiosity and wonder that every young scientist brings to the classroom.

Social Studies
The Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Kindergarten social studies curriculum provides students with an overview of the social sciences. While students likely received exposure to some of these concepts in Pre-Kindergarten, this course provides students with their first formal opportunity to investigate the basics of various disciplines. The first unit of study focuses on civics, where students explore the principles of good citizenship, including concepts of freedom and equality. This unit also addresses conflict resolution, compromise, and the significant contributions of community helpers. Following civics, students move on to the history unit, where they learn about traditions and gain an understanding of past, present, and future concepts. Additionally, students become familiar with the calendar, mastering the days, weeks, and months of the year. In the geography unit that follows, students engage with geographic tools and study the physical characteristics of landforms and water, with a specific emphasis on Maryland’s distinctive features, as well as transportation
and communication systems. Next, students enter the unit on people and nations of the world. In this unit, students explore cultural similarities and differences, while also learning about customs and traditions that foster community unity. The final unit of study is economics, where students examine decision-making processes related to acquiring goods and services, as well as understanding concepts of scarcity and making economic decisions.
